Up until the 1960s many houses in the lower mainland used oil burning furnaces which meant they would have had a below ground storage tank in the yard. If you are buying or selling an older property, an underground oil tank should be a top concern.

What are the most common signs of an underground oil tank? Suspicious pipes.

•  Filler pipe usually 2 ¾ inch in diameter and will be found in the yard generally 6-8 feet from the house.
• Vent
  Pipe was used to vent the fumes from the oil tank it is generally
  attached to the house , vertical and is 1 3\4 inch in diameter.
• Feeder
  lines they are made of copper ¼ to 1\2 inch in diameter and can
  be found on the foundation wall or crimped on the furnace floor.

Other ways to identify if your property has an oil tank include:

• Presence of an emergency burner switch, red in color and can be found around the furnace area.
• City
  or fire department records; you can contact your local fire department
  or city planning department as they may have records on file.
• A professional oil tank scan by a reputable company that also provides removal services if needed.
